Is it okay if I shop at Target sometimes?!

Some might not agree but…

When I ask clients where they love to shop for their clothes, I sometimes notice a bit of hesitation, as if they expect me to slap their hands for saying Zara. I’m not here to pass judgment. As a personal stylist, I'm here to help.

I often hear things like, "I just go where it's easy," or "I shop fast fashion because I don't know where else to go." There seems to be a common concern that I'll frown upon shopping at budget-friendly stores or fast fashion brands. So many times I’ve had this very conversation while working in a client’s closet:

Me: "Do you love this top?"

Them: "Well, I got it cheap at H&M, so it's okay if we need to let it go."

Me: "But do you love wearing it? Do you like how it fits and feels?"

Them: "Yes, I wear it all the time."

Done. Keep it!

The price or store doesn’t matter if you love the item and wear it regularly. Whether you shop luxury, ethically, thrift, or enjoy budget-friendly stores, no one way is inherently better. Yes, supporting companies that are slow fashion and have ethical standards is ideal, but it’s not realistic for everyone, and there’s no need to feel guilty for shopping within your budget.

That being said, when shopping in general, here are a few tips to shop smarter:

  • Expensive doesn’t equal quality. I’ve wasted so much money falling into this trap and conversely, I have bought some pieces 10 years ago from Target that are still in great condition and I continue to wear them. Examine the fabric and stitching. If it feels uncomfortable or looks poorly made, it's not worth the price.

  • Fit is everything. A bargain isn’t a bargain if you never wear the item. You may have spent $10 on those jeans but after the high, the sale gave you wears off you realize you don’t actually like how they fit so they get shoved to the back of the closet and never worn again. Then you tryon these jeans that are $80. Your butt looks great in them, you feel fantastic in them, and honestly want to walk out the store with them on and never take them off. Which do you think was actually the better choice? Invest in pieces you love and will wear often, even if they cost a little more.

  • Labels aren’t everything. I remember when I was in middle school and everyone had to have clothes from Abercrombie & Fitch or you just weren't “cool”. I didn’t think their shirts really looked right on me and every time I wore the one I had it just made me feel uncomfortable. AND! It fell apart only after 5 wears. Trendy brands aren’t always worth the hype. Focus on what works for you, not just what's in vogue.

  • Trends come and go. Avoid buying items just because they're trendy. Stick to your personal style to avoid regrettable purchases. For example, I’m not a fan of Birkenstock sandals (please don’t show up at my door with pitchforks). I don’t like how they look on me and really not my style. BUT I know a ton of clients love them and for the most part are absolutely okay to have in their closet, but I’m not going to run out and buy them just because they are on trend and everywhere.

  • No shame in budget shopping. If Target and H&M are within your budget, shop them confidently. Don’t let their sales trick you into buying what you don’t need. Be mindful of over-consumption, keep in mind the tips above and focus on building a wardrobe you truly love.

Remember, it's not about where you shop but how you shop. Make thoughtful choices, and your wardrobe will reflect your unique style without breaking the bank
